These 5 Lighting Upgrades Will Make Your Home Shine for the Holidays

The holidays are sure to bring one thing every year: house guests. Whether a friendly coffee catch up or a formal family dinner, the colder months bring more company to your home. And the darker daytime hours of the fall remind us that proper lighting is important for both comfort and safety.

There are a few easy lighting upgrades you can make to ensure your home has a welcoming glow for guests and to ensure your home’s exterior is lit for safety. Follow one or all of these ideas to get your home holiday-ready in no time.

  1. Add or update outdoor wall sconces

Invite your guests to the door by updating or adding outdoor sconces or wall lanterns at your front door. Be sure to choose a finish and a style that complements the exterior of your house, and think about whether you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical look.

For modern homes, we love this outdoor LED hurricane sconce from WAC:

For more traditional abodes, try something from Quoizel’s Coastal Armour collection, like the Stonington wall lantern in bronze:

2. Add path lights to your walk way

Path lights can create an inviting entryway while adding safety and security. Two or three path lights is usually enough to get the job done, and you’ll want to place them in planting beds alongside a walkway, as shown in the Kichler photo below.

  1. Upgrade kitchen pendants

Updating kitchen pendants for all the cooking, cleaning, and cheers-ing you’re about to do may be the smartest lighting investment you can make for the holidays. Consider replacing mini pendants with larger, more dramatic shapes. Think about installing a dimmer with the pendants to help set the mood when you go from prep to party.

To achieve the ever-popular “modern farmhouse” look, try a jar-inspired pendant:

4. Change the dining room chandelier

If you have a dining room, upgrading your chandelier is a straightforward way to make major impact. And with new, affordable styles, buying one before the holidays doesn’t have to break the bank.

From the Progress Lighting Design Series, you can score a variety of 5-light transitional chandeliers for less than $300, like the one in the Elevate series:

Of course, if budget is no object, there are endless options to impress your guests, like this platinum collection crystal leaf chandelier from Quoizel:

5. Pair your powder room fixtures & finishes

Though not a gathering space, having a house full of people guarantees your powder and bathrooms will see plenty of visitors. Updating your bath fixture and adding a coordinating mirror is a quick project that is sure to leave your guests impressed. Bonus points for matching your sink hardware to your new fixture finishes.

The Kolt fixture from Quoizel is a best-seller, thanks to its clean design and excellent light output:

So there you have it – five simple ways to update your home lighting just in time for the holidays.
