Wissahickon Scores High in Statewide Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)

The Statewide Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) have been published by the Department of Education, and Wissahickon School District scores for 2016-17 are high.  Wissahickon earned a 100.7 in their performance profile, their third consecutive year of scoring above 100.

According to the Department of Education, the score for a school is based upon indicators that define a high performing school. Many data elements come together to create the academic score: academic achievement, closing the achievement gap (progress of all students towards proficiency) and historically underperforming students’ scores (which are used to determine if a school is making progress towards proficiency) represent 50 percent of the academic performance score.  40 percent of the academic performance score includes Academic Growth/PVAAS, which measures the school’s impact on the academic progress of groups of students from year-to-year. And, other academic indicators like graduation rate, promotion rate and attendance rate, make up the last 10 percent of the total score.

Schools may earn up to 7 additional points via Extra Credit for Advanced Achievement based upon advanced performance on state and industry assessments, as well as for students earning a 3 or higher on an Advanced Placement exam or 4 or higher on an International Baccalaureate exam.

Some of the scores and categories we highlighted are as follows:

  • Overall Performance Score: 100.7
  • graduation rate 99.13
  • Sat/ACt college readiness benchmark-100.0

Closing the Achievement Gap scores were also high, and shows how well Wissahickon is doing to improve the scores of historically underperforming students:

  • Mathematics 83.54
  • ELA/Literature 99.23
  • Science/Biology 100.00
