Checkmate!

Nine Germantown Academy chess players traveled to Gettysburg over the weekend for the Pennsylvania State Scholastic Chess Championships, where hundreds of students from all over the Keystone State competed. Germantown Academy announced the results of this competition:


On Friday night, Dillon Agrawal ’21 won first place in the U1000 section of the Pennsylvania Quick Chess Championships.


In the main State Championship event, a two-day tournament on Saturday and Sunday where each player plays five games, the Patriots earned a number of noteworthy accolades:


U1300 SECTION:
Wes Champlin ’19 – 9th place


U1000 SECTION:
Ben Dobbins ’19 – 1st place with a perfect score of 5.0


Zach Thurlow ’20 – 9th place


Viyon Houessou-Adin ’21 – 14th place overall, 3rd place U800


Dillon Agrawal ’21 – 15th place


Terence Huang ’20 – 33rd overall, 2nd place U600


Nick Bekos ’20 – 43rd place


Ryan Ruane ’21 – 68th place


Adam Georgopoulos ’21 – 100th place

GA was also named the First Place Team in the state for the U1000 section based on the performances of Ben Dobbins ’19, Zach Thurlow ’20, Viyon Houessou-Adin ’21, and Dillon Agrawal ’21.


The players worked really hard this weekend; some games took as long as three hours to play!
