Commissioner says he will investigate why Montgomery County was designated a ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’ by the Trump administration

Montgomery County Commissioner Tom DiBello told MediaNews Group on Friday that he’s making “calls down to Washington trying to find out more details and find out specifically why Montgomery County is on the list” of sanctuary jurisdictions designated by the Trump Administration on Thursday.

“There is no sanctuary, and I’m not aware of the county ever making an official vote saying we’re a sanctuary county,” DiBello said, previously noting that while he’s “supportive of immigrants who come through the legal channels,” he said on Friday that “I don’t support the concept of sanctuary counties, cities,” and “I don’t support the harboring of fugitives.”

The classification alleges cities and counties have been “obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws, endangering American communities,” according to the announcement on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s website.

“These sanctuary city politicians are endangering Americans and our law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens,” said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “We are exposing these sanctuary politicians who harbor criminal illegal aliens and defy federal law. President Trump and I will always put the safety of the American people first. Sanctuary politicians are on notice: comply with federal law.”

Earlier this month, county officials launched an online Immigrant Resource Center “to provide both new and long-time County residents with resources for civil rights procedures, legal representation, small business opportunities, and related support”, according to their announcement.

Montgomery County Board of Commissioners Chair Neil Makhija and Vice Chair Jamila Winder published an opinion piece on May 15 in the Philadelphia Inquirer titled “Why Montgomery County won’t deputize our officials as ICE agents.”

“I support the following of the law, whatever that may be,” DiBello told MediaNews Group.
