Dr. Dana of Love Health Direct Primary Care: Failure of insurance-based primary care

I’m Dr. Dana, and I want to share with you the story of how Love Health, my direct primary care practice, came to be.

At 28, I went back to medical school with a six-week-old infant in tow. Did I fully understand what I was getting into? No. But what I did know, deep down, was that I loved people, and I was determined to help them feel better.

Fast forward a decade or so, and there I was, 38 or 39, questioning everything. I was heartbroken, wondering if medicine was the right path for me anymore. That’s when the seeds of Love Health started to take root. My journey through medicine has been diverse—addiction care, primary care, urgent care, telemedicine, and even psychiatric care. I eventually settled into urgent care because, as a single mom, it offered me the off-hours flexibility that primary care couldn’t. But urgent care started to break my heart. Patients were waiting for hours to be seen for something that could’ve been handled over a phone call or text if they had access to a caring doctor who knew them. It felt wrong to rush through visits, seeing people for 6-7 minutes when they deserved so much more. More troubling was the increasing number of children and teens coming in for help with anxiety.

As a personal trainer, a daily yogi, and someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression myself, I wanted to help them. But in the fast-paced, insurance-driven world of primary care and urgent care, there simply wasn’t the time. The system pushes for more patients per hour, squeezing out the meaningful connections that make a real difference.

That’s why, at 40, with my youngest child starting kindergarten, I made the jump. I started Love Health. My goal? To provide concierge-level care at a fraction of the cost, without the burden of insurance dictating how much time I can spend with my patients.

At Love Health, my patients know they can text or call me directly when they’re sick or need advice. There’s no waiting room, no two-hour lines. They choose how they want to be seen—whether in person or through telemedicine. I even offer advanced care kits for their homes that allow for full physical exams they can send to me. And because I’m not boxed in by 10-minute visits, I can offer 30-minute, 45-minute, or even 90-minute appointments. I’ve taken a patient with severe anxiety for laps around the building during our visit. I’ve met another at Starbucks because that’s where they feel most comfortable. I know every one of my patients, and I tailor their care to meet their individual needs.

Beyond traditional medicine, I offer holistic primary care, lifestyle medicine, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. My goal is to help each of my patients find peace, health, and prosperity—because true health is a blend of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Yes, I can prescribe medication for anxiety, but now I also have the time to sit down with my patients, teach them breathwork, or guide them through yoga techniques.

And when it comes to weight loss, I’m not just offering quick-fix medications. I offer a comprehensive, holistic program focused on body composition and sustainable health. It’s something I never could’ve done in a rushed seven-minute visit within the insurance model. So that’s what Love Health is all about—compassionate, personalized, and holistic care that puts the patient first. I hope to grow Love Health, and in doing so, show the world what true, compassionate medical guidance looks like.
