Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown welcomed its newest addition, a baby Reeve’s muntjac, the zoo announced Friday. Violet, the fawn’s mother, gave birth to him earlier this week and has been providing him with excellent care, the zoo shared. The fawn weighs only about 2.2 pounds but is healthy and already running and playing.

Muntjacs are a type of small deer native to South Asia. Though some muntjac species are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Reeve’s muntjacs are fairly common. Violet and her son are part of the zoo’s Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program which manages healthy and genetically diverse animal populations in captivity.
