Germantown Academy Swimmer Wins 18-and-Under National Championship!

Germantown Academy rising senior Emma Atkinson ’20 won the 18-and-under national championship in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championship, which is being held at the Toyota Aqua Zone. The Phillips 66 National Championship (July 31-August 4) is considered one of the biggest swimming events in the United States.

Atkinson’s award was given out by USA Swimming. It goes to the highest placing 18-and-under swimmer in each event at Nationals. Atkinson, one of the younger swimmers to compete, was fourth overall in the 200 backstroke A Final, but the top 18-and-under swimmer.

Atkinson, swimming for the Germantown Academy Aquatic Club, which is led by GA Varsity Coach Jeff Thompson, also took eighth overall in the 200 freestyle, and 11th in the 800 freestyle.  She also competed in the 100 backstroke.

Thus far, Atkinson has qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials in four events: 800 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, and 200 Backstroke.
