Gov. Shapiro, Montco commissioner Makhija, Rep. Dean, President Trump issue responses to the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk

Governor Josh Shapiro of Abington Township, Montgomery County commissioner Neil Makhija, Representative Madeleine Dean of Glenside, and President Donald Trump issued responses on behalf of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University today. Kirk was 31.

The suspect in the shooting is not yet in custody, CNN reported, noting that the school said earlier that police had someone in custody.

President Donald Trump is ordering “all American Flags” lowered to half-staff in honor of his passing.

“In honor of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M,” the president wrote on Truth Social.

“Political violence has no place in our country,” Shapiro said on X.com. “We must speak with moral clarity. The attack on Charlie Kirk is horrifying and this growing type of unconscionable violence cannot be allowed in our society.”

“The shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University is horrifying and deeply unacceptable,” Makhija said in a statement. “My thoughts are with Kirk’s family and all those affected by this vile act. Violence has no place in politics, in our schools, or in our society.”

From Representative Dean’s response:

I’m praying for Charlie Kirk.

Political violence is never the answer — and we must never tolerate such despicable action. Our nation is better than this.

In such a frightening time, my thoughts are with Mr. Kirk’s family and the Utah Valley University community who are now forever changed by this horror.
