Gwynedd Mercy University in Lower Gwynedd and Geisinger, a health and wellness organization, are working together to offer the Geisinger Nursing Scholars Gateway Program, which provides eligible GMercyU nursing students up to $40,000 in loan repayments when they launch their careers at Geisinger.
GMercyU Bachelor of Science in Nursing or second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who apply and are selected for the Geisinger Nursing Scholars Gateway Program will receive up to $40,000 in student loan payments once they graduate from GMercyU, pass the nursing licensure exam, and begin a three-year full-time work commitment at an approved Geisinger location. The program also includes new graduate support through Geisinger’s evidence-based Nurse Residency Program and opportunities for career growth.
“We are excited to work with Geisinger to help address the critical need for more compassionate and highly skilled nurses here in the Commonwealth,” Jane H. Tang, PhD, RN, NE-BC, Dean of GMercyU’s Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing & Health Professions said. “GMercyU’s reputation for preparing nurse leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs in the Mercy tradition is well known, and this innovative program provides a wonderful employment opportunity for our graduates that also includes student loan relief. It’s a win-win-win for our graduates, Geisinger and the Commonwealth.”
If selected, students will transition into a full-time nursing role within the Geisinger system with a work commitment of three years at one of these locations: Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa; Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; or Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa.
Geisinger will repay the students’ loans on a monthly basis for as long as they remain employed as full-time nurses. Students who leave Geisinger before the three-year period is up will be responsible for paying any remaining student loan balance, but will not be required to repay any loan payments already made on their behalf.
