Lower Gwynedd Township’s Board of Supervisors approved an updated section of the 9/11 Memorial Trail which will run through the township on Tuesday night. The 9/11 National Memorial Trail is a 1,500+ mile bike route which honors those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It passes through the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. and National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.

The now-approved route uses existing roads in the area. Cyclists will travel from Township Line Road to Plymouth Road, then on to Evans Road and Tanglewood Drive. Turning onto Stonington Circle and Rose Lane quickly after, they will travel on Gwynedd View Road before connecting to an existing trail which parallels Dekalb Pike. According to township officials, the new route is expected to have little effect on local traffic and will carry no changes to township roads. Township Manager Mimi Gleason said that should residents express concerns about safety and higher traffic volumes, the township can rescind the trail designation. The only significant change will be the installation of trail markers long the route.

Signage and trail markers will be installed and paid for by the 9/11 Memorial Trail Alliance. The markers can be viewed in a draft of trail plans here: bos-meeting-08252026.pdf. According to the 9/11 Memorial Trail Alliance, they hope to have all signage in place by the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Cyclists and organizations can bike portions of the trail or travel the route in its entirety. Registration is open to take part in the memorial trail’s 25th Anniversary Challenge until October 27.
