Montco PA and Montco MD merge under one unified government

Officials from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and Montgomery County, Maryland, announced today a bi-county merger designed to streamline services and increase regional influence.

According to the announcement, the merger “will bring together residents of both Montgomery County communities under one unified county government.”

“This is about efficiency and scale,” said Montgomery County, PA Commissioner Neil K. Makhija. “We’re putting aside all the things between us—our differences, the 150-mile distance, and the state of Delaware—to make government work better.”

The counties “have often been confused for one another” which could offer “strategic advantages, such as the creation of the country’s most complicated phone tree and the ability to claim famous residents from both regions,” the announcement said.

“We are glad to partner with Montgomery County, PA, for this mega-merger that is a win-win for both jurisdictions and will immediately reduce confusion on internet searches and increase confusion among residents,” said Montgomery County, MD Executive Marc Elrich. “We are looking to expand to other Montgomery counties around the country. This idea started as a joke—and that’s exactly how we plan to implement it.”

Note: April Fool’s. The counties created the announcement as a joke. A spokesperson for Montgomery County, Pa., told The Reporter that officials were joking about merging and decided to share it.
