Shapiro and Garrity to officially face off for governor of Pennsylvania in November

Governor Josh Shapiro and state treasurer Stacy Garrity will face off for the governorship in November after clearing the fields in their primary contests, NBC News reported today.

Both candidates ran opposed. Shapiro, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, is considered a heavy favorite and has reported outraising Garrity by more than 10-to-1. As of May 4, Shapiro had raised nearly $38 million, according to Spotlight PA. Garrity entered the primary with about $1.4 million.

A retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel, businesswoman, and Pennsylvania’s 78th treasurer, Garrity made headlines in April after she said the State Treasury had declined to pay for over $1 million in security upgrades to Shapiro’s private residence in Abington Township.

In January, she received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, who later hosted her at Mar-a-Lago for a fundraiser.

“Republicans expect Garrity, who has been elected statewide in her own right before, to be a significantly stronger nominee than the flawed Mastriano was four years ago,” NBC News wrote.

“It will take all of us to defeat Josh Shapiro this November. Josh Shapiro has collected millions in campaign contributions from liberal billionaires and he is the darling of the national Democrat establishment,” Garrity said in a statement. “We need Republicans, Independents, and like-minded Democrats across Pennsylvania to step up, get involved, and help carry our message of a better future for Pennsylvania to all 67 counties.”

Garrity “will apply the lessons she’s learned and experiences she’s encountered as a successful businesswoman, soldier, and public servant to make Pennsylvania the Keystone State to grow a business and raise a family,” her campaign website says.

“We’ve gotten a lot of stuff done in the last few years – growing our economy and creating thousands of good-paying jobs, investing in public education and law enforcement, standing up for our freedoms and democracy – but there’s a lot more to do. Tonight, with a commitment to continuing to fight and deliver for all Pennsylvanians, I’m proud to accept the Democratic nomination for reelection as the Governor of this great Commonwealth,” Shapiro said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The Shapiro-Davis Administration is working to ensure every Pennsylvanian has the freedom and opportunity to chart their own course and succeed – no matter what they look like, who they love, or who they pray to,” Shapiro’s campaign website says. “That’s why Governor Shapiro is also fighting to flip Pennsylvania’s four key Congressional seats so Pennsylvanians can have leaders in Washington, like Bob Brooks, who will stand up to Donald Trump and deliver results for them.”
