Upper Dublin native Barry Caplan has purchased the Wyndam Hotel and El Limon properties at 34 and 38 East Butler Avenue in Ambler, along with the Gypsy Blu restaurant. The Gypsy Blu restaurant, which operates on the first two floors of the Wyndam Hotel property, was originally opened by the Conshy Girls restaurant group in 2015 and was sold to Bob Ross in 2020.

The recent sale involved two transactions. Michael Golden sold the property and liquor license to Caplan and Ross sold the restaurant. While the El Limon building was acquired, the restaurant will continue to operate as normal under its existing ownership.

Golden purchased the properties in 2015 and as a member of Conshy Girls, originally opened Gypsy Blu. He offered after the sale, “We’ve sold the Wyndam Hotel in Ambler. It was a wonderful result to a 11 year passion project and I was honored to have been the caretaker for this unique and special property. We left it a lot better than we found it.”

Caplan, a 1982 graduate of Upper Dublin High School, was interviewed by The Philadelphia Business Journal for an article published on February 27th and discussed his plans for two new concepts within the Wyndam Hotel. From the article:

Caplan hopes to reopen the space as Porter and Gaslight during the first week of April. Both concepts will be open daily.

Porter, located on the ground floor, will serve elevated American fare, such as shrimp cocktail, roasted duck breast and linguine vongole. Named after traditional hotel porters, the restaurant will feature references to vintage luggage, brass and leather accents, and vintage wallpaper.

On the second level of the building, Gaslight will serve craft cocktails and small bites, featuring a chef’s table for a private dining experience. The cocktail bar will have a moodier atmosphere with dim lighting.

The restaurant is still open with limited hours during the renovations, opening on a daily basis at 4:00 p.m. for dinner, and for weekend brunch at 10:30 a.m.
