These 5 Lighting Upgrades Will Make Your Home Shine for the Holidays
The holidays are sure to bring one thing every year: house guests. Whether a friendly coffee catch up or a formal family dinner, the colder months bring more company to your home. And the darker daytime hours of the fall remind us that proper lighting is important for both comfort and safety.
There are a few easy lighting upgrades you can make to ensure your home has a welcoming glow for guests and to ensure your home’s exterior is lit for safety. Follow one or all of these ideas to get your home holiday-ready in no time.
- Add or update outdoor wall sconces
Invite your guests to the door by updating or adding outdoor sconces or wall lanterns at your front door. Be sure to choose a finish and a style that complements the exterior of your house, and think about whether you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical look.

2. Add path lights to your walk way
Path lights can create an inviting entryway while adding safety and security. Two or three path lights is usually enough to get the job done, and you’ll want to place them in planting beds alongside a walkway, as shown in the Kichler photo below.
- Upgrade kitchen pendants
Updating kitchen pendants for all the cooking, cleaning, and cheers-ing you’re about to do may be the smartest lighting investment you can make for the holidays. Consider replacing mini pendants with larger, more dramatic shapes. Think about installing a dimmer with the pendants to help set the mood when you go from prep to party.
To achieve the ever-popular “modern farmhouse” look, try a jar-inspired pendant:
4. Change the dining room chandelier
If you have a dining room, upgrading your chandelier is a straightforward way to make major impact. And with new, affordable styles, buying one before the holidays doesn’t have to break the bank.
