Starting in late February or early March, I carry a bucket of seed with me on my evening rounds for frost-seeding the pastures. Right now I'm handcasting clover around rocks or thin spots in the fields, and I throw a handful or two around the cow and sheep feeders, so their hooves work the seed into the ground and any hay that falls will provide some cover. Around late April I'll switch to perennial rye, and maybe experiment with different annuals. Over time, I've focused on implementing sustainable strategies to improve pastures without the use of equipment or a lot of time, and managing the livestock so that they do a lot of the work for me.
