Germantown Academy of Fort Washington has named John Cox as the new head coach of varsity boys’ basketball and an associate athletic director.
“We are excited to welcome John Cox to Germantown Academy,” Director of Athletics Tim Ginter said. “His basketball background as a player and a coach will instill the leadership, vision, and character we value as a community and we’re confident that Coach Cox will elevate our team, both on and off the court.”
Cox coached six years with La Salle University’s men’s basketball team, including three as an assistant coach, and also served as the director of basketball operations and director of player development, scouting and analytics for the Explorers.
“I am truly honored to accept the role of associate athletic director and head coach at Germantown Academy,” Cox said. “It’s an honor to be part of a school with such a rich tradition of excellence. I’m looking forward to contributing to a culture that values both academic and athletic achievement.”
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, where his father was a professional basketball player, Cox became one of the top scorers in Philadelphia high school history at George Washington Carver High School. He finished his prep career with 1,798 points and averaged 29 points a game, shooting 52 percent from the field, as a senior.
Following in the footsteps of his father, former NBA Draft Pick John “Chubby” Cox, the Patriots new head coach went on to play four seasons at the University of San Francisco and scored 1,540 points to rank ninth in school history. A 2003-04 and 2004-05 First Team All-WCC honoree, Cox scored 1,066 total points over his junior and senior years alone and was inducted into USF’s Hall of Fame in 2019, alongside his father.
After his collegiate career, Cox played professionally from 2005-19 in both Europe and South America. While with Medi Bayreuth in Germany, Cox served as a mentor and helped develop younger American players. He has represented Venezuela internationally on multiple occasions. Notably, he was part of Venezuela’s team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was the leading scorer in the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup.
The Patriots return nine varsity letterwinners from the 2024-25 season.
