Jimmy Carroll – A Glimpse Into the Art of His Comedy, Illustrations and Beyond

Local comedian, Jimmy Carrol will perform to a sold out audience tomorrow night at Act II Playhouse.  His show is called ” Last Of The Boomers” and as Jimmy told us, its subject matter ” takes you back to a time that’s long gone.” See a few minutes of the Last Of The Boomers act below.

AroundAmbler.com was lucky to catch up with Jimmy between his stand-up shows on ships, in Vegas and clubs throughout the country.  He expressed that he was happy to be back in Ambler performing…” Ambler cut my teeth, I started at the ‘Tap Room’- the Ambler Cabaret-and am now coming full circle.”

When Jimmy was eight, his father took him to see Bill Cosby live at the Temple Music Fair.  It was the first time he saw live comedy, and a comic perform an act with just a stool and a microphone, he explains “…the first time I saw live comedy as an art because of how words can be sculpted.”  He became an instant fan of the art of comedy and bought 45 records of Cosby that he listened to over and over, but it was hearing the “Class Clown” record by George Carlin that would forever change his life.

Jimmy went to Upper Dublin High School, class of 1980, and at a senior night in the cafeteria remembers doing an impression of his football coach which led to three standing ovations and two encores…” A feat I have never topped“, he said.  This gave him a real taste of what comedy was about and he was even more hooked.

Every Tuesday at the Tap Room was “Comedy Night”, and when Jimmy was 20, he snuck in underage with a buddy just so he could take a crack at stand-up.  His act followed comedian, Bill McCarty that night, and 4 years later, as a working comic, he worked with McCarty again and the two reminisced about that first Ambler Cabaret night, and how Jimmy went on to perform 5 minute acts each Tuesday on Comedy Night at the Cabaret starting when he turned 21.  Now, as time and experience would have it, Bill McCarty opens for Jimmy Carroll.

In 1984, Jimmy was the winner of the “Funniest College Student Contest” held at the Comedy Works in Philadelphia. He later went on to take first place in “The Second Annual Comedy Showdown” held at the Comedy Stop at the Tropicana in Atlantic City N.J.

Jimmy performs over 200 days a year. He and his wife also own two comedy clubs…Wise Crackers in Allentown and Reactors Comedy Club in West Chester.  He also writes for other acts in his down time, like “six” which is an all A Cappella comedy act.

Jimmy has worked with Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Jeff Foxworthy, Richard Jeni, Rosie O’ Donnell, Richard Belzer, Carol Leifer, Nina Simone, David Beinot, Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyro, Todd Rundgren, and many more.

Carroll’s talents don’t end there, he recently wrote and illustrated a children’s book called, ” Now My Name Is Moose” which is coming out soon.

Carroll is also an accomplished illustrator, caricaturist and cartoon artist.
