Lower Gwynedd police increasing patrols, offer ‘porch pirate’ tips in response to theft uptick

The Lower Gwynedd Police Department recently noted a sharp increase in packages stolen from residents’ homes during the holiday season.

According to police, the delivered packages are sometimes stolen by organized criminal rings who follow delivery truck’ routes.

Lower Gwynedd police are increasing patrols in an effort to curtail these thefts.

They would also like to share a few suggestions to help safe-guard your packages:

Have your package shipped to a nearby pick-up location.
Many retailers and shipping companies will offer to have your package shipped to a locker, warehouse, or even local grocery stores. Check your options when filling out shipping information.

Leave Delivery Instructions for Your Driver
Let the shipper know exactly where you’d like the package placed or consider having valuable items only receivable upon signature. Some people have purchased package drop boxes and lockers for outside of their home.

Put a Temporary hold on Your Packages
If you’re headed out of town or have a busy week ahead, most delivery companies will place a temporary hold on your packages for a couple weeks to be picked up at your convenience.

Consider Purchasing or Upgrading Your Home Surveillance
Many brands are offering low-cost and easy to set up video cameras to place outside your home. Some quick acting residents have been able to relay key information about the thieves resulting in arrests and the return of property.
