The Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors voted to appoint Mark Freeman as the township’s next police chief during its September 1st meeting. Chief Freeman will start on October 12, 2026, with a swearing-in ceremony to follow on October 20th.

Chief Freeman replaces Chief Ken Lawson, who is retiring after a 41-year career with Whitpain Township.

Chief Freeman has 35 years of law enforcement experience with Upper Providence Township, where he has served as Chief of Police since 2021. Prior to becoming chief, he served as a D.A.R.E. Officer, Juvenile Officer, Field Training Officer, Public Information Officer, S.W.A.T. Assistant Team Leader, Taser Instructor, and Accreditation Manager. His ranks have included Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2016 and holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Saint Joseph’s University.

“What drew me to Whitpain was the strong sense of community here. As I learned more about the township, I was impressed by the pride people have in this community and the importance placed on public service,” said Chief Freeman. “I wanted to be part of a community where relationships matter, where people know and support one another, and where public safety is built on trust.”

“Residents should expect to see me in the community, I want you to know your Chief of Police and I want you to feel comfortable approaching me, talking with me, and sharing your concerns and ideas,” offered Freeman. “I am also looking forward to working alongside the men and women of the Whitpain Police Department, getting to know them, and learning from their experience. I have a great deal of respect for the work they do and the responsibility they carry every day.”

Chief Freeman’s selection followed Safe City Solutions’ conducting a search and evaluation of candidates on behalf of the township. Approximately 30 candidates applied for the position.
