The owners of Mermaid Lake have sold the property to Metropolitan Development Group, which has submitted a conditional use application to construct 53 detached single-family homes on the property.
The 65-acre Mermaid Lake property has a swim club, a nine-hole par three golf course, sports courts, and picnic pavilions. A summer day-camp also operates on the property.
According to a post on Whitpain Township’s website, the township has been and is currently interested in obtaining at least a portion of the property. (See article here)
At Tuesday’s Board Meeting, The Supervisors discussed their intent to purchase all or a portion of the Mermaid Tract for recreational purposes. The property was recently sold by the original owners to Metropolitan Development Group. The new owners subsequently submitted a conditional use application to build 53 detached single-family homes on the property. However, the Supervisors continue to seek various alternatives to enhance recreational opportunities within the Township; including adding additional ball fields, trails, and playing courts.
The Township plans to meet with representatives from Metropolitan and remains committed to the possible acquisition of all or a portion of the Mermaid Tract to enhance recreational opportunities for the community.
In a one-page document, the township breaks down the history of what has occurred in discussions with the property owners, why it wants to obtain the property and next steps.
