The castle originally known as Lindenwold Castle and today as the Castle at Mattison Estate located in Ambler (Upper Dublin Township) will be auctioned on December 19th. The reserve price is $1.5 million.
The castle was originally constructed in 1890 on 400 acres as the home for Richard Van Zeelust Mattison, the head of Keasbey and Mattison Company, which manufactured asbestos. Mattison moved out of the castle during The Great Depression, and the property was sold to the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth after he died in 1936. The sisters initially operated an orphanage in the castle and, over the years, also offered care to abused and neglected children.
In recent years, new ownership has redeveloped the property with townhouses and a senior living facility. According to the information included with the auction listing, the castle was approved for a mixed-use conversion and has undergone $3 million in renovations since 2019. The castle has original elements such as specialty custom trim millwork, stained glass, gilded wallpapered ceilings, and carved marble fireplaces.
