Yesterday, the Montgomery County Board of Elections, which is effectively just the three county commissioners, voted two-to-one to reduce the number of polling locations from 352 to 140 due to the pandemic (a cut of 60 percent). The move is just for the upcoming primary which is on June 2nd.
The approved plan moves all polling locations into currently shuttered public schools. The consolidation means that most schools will be the voting location for at least three precincts.
Two municipalities, West Conshohocken and Rockledge, contested the move. They both have a single voting precinct and wanted to retain their normal locations and not vote at a school outside their borders.
The vote to approve the plan went down party lines. Democrats Ken Lawrence and Dr. Val Arkoosh voted to approve the plan and Republican Joe Gale voted no. Gale wanted to amend the plan to allow for West Conshohocken and Rockledge to keep their normal polling locations.
