Jenkintown Acupuncture & Women’s Wellness, an alternative and holistic health service, opened at 504 West Avenue in June.
Owner Dr. Deb Davies, DACM, Dipl. OM, L.O.M., is a graduate of Upper Dublin High School and former resident of Fort Washington, Dresher, and Ambler. She recently came back to her roots after practicing for over 20 years in California.
Now a Jenkintown resident, she says she’s seen the field blossom in the region.
“There were very few acupuncturists when I grew up here. That’s part of what inspired me to go into this work,” Dr. Davies told Around Ambler. “I would come back once a year to visit family, and I’d see them pop up one by one. In San Diego, there’s one on every corner and we were still able to be successful. People are opening up to alternative health practices, which is great to see.”
Dr. Davies specializes in women’s health—menstrual irregularities, infertility, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery, among others—and her treatments include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion, and lifestyle guidance.
A former birth doula, she says she uses a one-on-one approach to help patients overcome challenges. Sometimes she even incorporates a rolling pin:
“It’s all about bringing the body back into balance. One of the ways we diagnose in Chinese medicine is by examining the tongue—it’s the only muscle you can actually see outside of the body, and it gives us incredible insight into your internal health,” she said. “I also feel the pulses, which is a key diagnostic tool in Chinese medicine. There are 28 distinct pulse qualities we study, and they help me understand what’s going on beneath the surface. I use the pulses to identify where the body might be deficient and needs strengthening, or where there’s excess—like in the case of pain—that needs to be calmed or released.
The ultimate goal? Less stress, better sleep, and overall improved health and vitality.”
Dr. Davies also works with women and children experiencing pain, anxiety, and digestive concerns. She serves on the faculty at the Won Institute of Graduate Studies, now based in Warminster, and teaches continuing education courses in perinatal acupuncture at colleges and online programs throughout the U.S. and internationally.
“I’m actively connecting with midwives, doulas, nurses, and psychologists—really anyone in the perinatal space,” Dr. Davies said. “I’m especially passionate about supporting women who are having trouble getting or staying pregnant. We talk a lot about diet and lifestyle, and one thing I often see is that many of my infertility patients are physically cold when they come to me,” she said.
“There’s a reason everyone knows the saying ‘a bun in the oven’—because it speaks to something real. A woman’s body needs warmth to create and sustain life. Part of my work is helping bring that warmth back so conception becomes more possible—not just to get pregnant, but to stay pregnant, carry to term, and have a healthy baby and a healthy mama, especially if she hopes to grow her family in the future,” she said.
“A lot of people have a lot of concerns about healthcare these days. There are thousands of years of this wisdom and evidence-based research supporting these practices. There are so many people who are open to it. It’s a different perspective, so I try to help people see things differently,” she said.
