The Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors will consider adopting an ordinance on October 15th that would limit the use of plastics, including single-use plastic bags, at retail establishments. How would this work? If you were shopping at the grocery store, items like deli meat and fruit could still be wrapped or bagged in plastic; however, the store could not offer plastic bags at checkout to transport the two items home.
The language of the proposed ordinance outlines several reasons the ordinance is believed to be necessary. From the ordinance:
To curb litter on the streets, in the parks, and in the trees; protect the local streams, rivers, waterways and other aquatic environments; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; reduce solid waste generation; promote the use of reusable, compostable, and recyclable materials within the Township; and to preserve the natural, scenic, historic, and aesthetic values of the Township.
The ordinance also impacts the packing and utensils used by restaurants for takeout and delivery. You can view the proposed ordinance here. If adopted, it would become enforceable in one year.
