Gov Shapiro and his family escape fire set at the Governor’s Residence, police suspect arson

Governor Josh Shapiro of Abington announced this morning on X.com that the Governor’s Residence on North Front Street in Harrisburg broke out in fire last night around 2:00am.

Shapiro said he and his family “woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire” to the house.

According to the post, the Shapiros were unharmed and the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire extinguished the fire, which caused a significant amount of damage to a portion of the residence, 6ABC said. The governor and his family were present in a different part of the residence at the time of the fire.

The fire coincided with the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which Shapiro and his family had celebrated at the residence.

“Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family – and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe,” Shapiro said.

Though the investigation is ongoing, State Police say they are prepared to say that this was an act of arson. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $10,000 through PSP Tips for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible, 6ABC said.
