The Spring House intersection improvement project is underway, and Lower Gwynedd officials are encouraging area residents to be patient until final renovations are completed at the end of the month.
PennDOT announced in January that Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) Intersection, commonly referred to as “Five-Points Intersection” in Montgomery Township, would receive a $14.2 million worth of travel and safety improvements beginning Monday, January 29.

Utility relocation is still ongoing at the Spring House intersection. The BOS authorized a contract extension at their meeting on January 23, 2024. Verizon is the final utility to relocate their lines and then the poles will be removed by PECO. We anticipate that the final wire relocation and pole removal will be completed by the end of February. Motorists will be notified about the pole removal as it will impact traffic in this area. Stormwater management facilities will be installed beginning on the Sumneytown Road side of the intersection and then continue through the intersection and along Norristown Road. Full construction will begin in the Spring of 2024 with completion anticipated for late Summer 2024.
A tentative timeline for the project is as follows:
- Phase 2 contract extension- January 23, 2024
- Verizon-Final utility line relocation and pole removal- February 2024
- Stormwater management pipe installation- February-March 2024
- Construction to begin- April 2024
- Project Completion Summer 2024 (Tentative)
The following periodic lane closures were announced in January for tree clearing and utility work at the following locations through early March:
- Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) between North Wales Road to McLaughlin Road
- Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road) between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road
- Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) between Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) and Betty’s Avenue
“The Springhouse Intersection Improvement Project is progressing, and the completion of utility crews’ projects is a positive step,” the Lower Gwynedd Police Department said. “It’s important for the community to be patient and understanding during this period, as road construction and improvement projects often bring temporary inconveniences.”
When completed, the improvements will include a widened Norristown Road and Sumneytown Pike, with additional through lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions. New traffic signals, a concrete sidewalk, an improved trail, and ADA ramps will also be added.
