Meet the Ambler Locals Competing on “The Great Food Truck Race”

Ambler locals, Mikey Robins and Ashanti Dixon, along with their friend Taylor Randolph, make up one of the teams competing on, The Great Food Truck Race airing on The Food Network , where seven teams of food truck novices battle from New Orleans to Savannah for a $50,000 grand prize. Hosted by Tyler Florence, this high-stakes road trip is full of beautiful scenery, Southern landmarks and intense food challenges. We recently talked with Mikey & Ashanti about their team, The Breakfast Club, and they shared some of their favorite experiences from competing on the show.

The two met while working at Mikey’s event planning and catering consulting company based in Lower Gwynedd, and also worked together at Gypsy Blu.  Mikey and Taylor are also graduates of Germantown Academy.  Their team & truck,” The Breakfast Club”, serves brunch on-the-go, and is also the youngest team competing .  After taking first place in last week’s challenge in New Orleans, they have shown their competition that, despite their age, this Brunch Squad is not to be underestimated.  They both agree that one of the most interesting components to the challenges is, that not one competitor had ever worked or owned a food truck, which made it an authentic and sometimes hilarious new experience (especially when Ashanti had to drive the truck to each destination) . If you missed last week’s episode, catch it here.

One of their favorite challenges can be seen in this Sunday’s episode airing at 9/8c., where the remaining six teams hit the streets of Pensacola to sell their dishes, but find out about a chance for immunity when Tyler Florence challenges them to make the most profits off a dish featuring the special of the day, a full fresh red snapper. For this challenge, Mikey proudly passed the culinary torch to his teammate, Ashanti, who has Jamaican roots & grew up eating and watching her Granny prepare Red Snapper for her family on the beach.  Watch The Food Network this Sunday to see how this challenge unfolds.
