SEPTA Announces Butler Avenue Grade Crossing Renewal Construction Beginning April 26

SEPTA announced that Butler Avenue will be closed to all vehicle traffic at 7pm Friday, April 26th through 7pm Monday, April 29th between Main Street and Maple Street, at the intersection of the SEPTA Railroad tracks to renew the existing grade crossing surface.

SEPTA released the following details about this upcoming project and what you can expect regarding traffic flow:

  • Northbound traffic will detour from Butler Avenue at Morris Road (S.R. 2001); proceeding north to Mt.
Pleasant Avenue; east on Mt. Pleasant Avenue; south on Spring Garden Street; Southwest on Reiffs Mill
Road; south on Main Street, to end at the intersection of Main Street and Butler Pike.
  • Southbound traffic will detour from Butler Avenue onto Main Street; proceeding north to Reiffs Mill Road;
northeast on Reiffs Mill Road; north on Spring Garden Street; west on Mt. Pleasant Avenue; south on Morris
Road (S.R. 2001), to end at the intersection of Morris Road and Butler Pike.
  • All traffic lanes will open on or before 7:00 P.M., Monday, April 26, 2019.
At no time will access to businesses and private property, north or south of the crossing, be barricaded.

  • Upon completion of all of the improvements, the new grade crossing will provide a smoother ride across the tracks.
  • Additionally, the new crossing surface will enable SEPTA to more effectively maintain track surface conditions.

Existing grade crossing surface was last renewed in 2007. SEPTA’s
in-house forces will:
 Remove the existing concrete crossing surface and rails
 Excavate subgrade.
 Install new ballast, timbers, & rails.
 Surface tracks and install new precast concrete track panels.
 Mill approaches as required and pave roadway through track area and approaches.

SEPTA greatly appreciates your patience and understanding while this important construction project is completed.
